Mongolian Beef Recipe

Ingredients

For the Beef Marinade:

  • 200 grams beef, sliced
  • 1/4 cup water
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/2 egg white
  • A pinch of black pepper
  • A pinch of baking soda
  • A splash of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon water

For the Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup chicken broth or water
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch + 1 tablespoon water
  • A splash of mushroom soy sauce (for color)

Additional Ingredients:

  • Oil, for frying
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 5 cm scallions, chopped
  • Bell pepper, sliced

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef:

    • In a bowl, massage the sliced beef with water and salt.
    • In a separate bowl, mix together the remaining marinade ingredients: egg white, black pepper, baking soda, soy sauce, and the cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water). Combine this marinade with the beef slices and let it marinate for about 30 minutes.
  2. Cook the Beef:

    • Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat.
    • Fry the marinated beef slices until they are browned and cooked through on both sides. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:

    • In the same pan, add a little more oil if needed and sauté the minced garlic until fragrant.
    • Add the chicken broth (or water), soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and the cornstarch slurry (1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water). Stir well and bring to a simmer.
    • Adjust the color with a splash of mushroom soy sauce, if desired.
  4. Combine and Serve:

    • Return the cooked beef to the pan, tossing to coat in the sauce.
    • Add the chopped scallions and sliced bell pepper, and stir to combine.
    • Cook for an additional minute or until the vegetables are slightly tender but still crisp.
  5. Serve:

    • Transfer the Mongolian Beef to a serving dish. Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.
