Instructions

  1. Begin by buttering each slice of bread on one side. Then, slice 15 pieces diagonally.

  2. Whisk together the eggs and milk until well combined. Add salt and pepper to taste.

  3. In an 8-inch round, 3 1/2-inch deep baking dish (which has been sprayed with non-stick spray), arrange 10 half slices of bread with the buttered side down in a whirlygig (swirl) pattern, filling in any gaps with pieces from the 16th slice of bread.

  4. Sprinkle one-third of the cheese and one-third of the green onions evenly over the bread slices. Then, pour just enough of the egg and milk mixture to cover.

  5. Repeat the previous step twice more, gently pressing down on layers 2 and 3 with your hand before adding the egg and milk mixture. The majority of the egg and milk mixture should go on the top layer, as it will seep down to the layers below.

  6. Sprinkle the top with paprika to garnish.

  7. Cover and set aside for 2 hours at room temperature or refrigerate overnight. It’s crucial for the pudding to set for a minimum of 2 hours in order to set properly.

  8. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the pudding uncovered for 1 hour or until the top is golden brown and the center is firm.

  9. Once baked, slice the pudding into wedges and serve hot.

This Breakfast Bread and Butter Pudding is a hearty and satisfying dish that’s sure to become a favorite among family and friends. Enjoy the warmth and comfort of this savory treat on any occasion!
