Ingredients:

  • 2 loaves of frozen bread dough or equivalent homemade dough
  • 1 pound ground hamburger
  • 1 small head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • Salt and pepper to taste (1 tsp pepper recommended)

Instructions:

Step Description
1 Thaw two loaves of frozen bread dough or make the equivalent amount using your favorite bread recipe.
2 While the dough is thawing, prepare the filling.
3 In a skillet, brown the hamburger over medium heat. Once cooked, drain any excess fat and return the meat to the pan.
4 Add the chopped cabbage and diced onion to the skillet with the cooked hamburger. Cook until the cabbage and onion have softened and caramelized slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste, with around 1 teaspoon of pepper recommended for added flavor.
5 Allow the dough to rise according to the package instructions or your homemade recipe. Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
6 Cut the rolled-out dough into pieces measuring approximately 4 inches by 8 inches.
7 Spoon approximately 1/2 cup of the meat and cabbage mixture onto each piece of dough.
8 Fold the dough over the filling, sealing the edges to create a pocket. Ensure that the seam is on the bottom to prevent the filling from leaking out during baking.
9 Place the assembled Runzas seam-side-down on a greased baking sheet.
10 Allow the assembled Runzas to rise for an additional 20-30 minutes.
11 Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
12 Once the Runzas have finished rising, bake them in the preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and the dough is cooked through.
13 Remove the Runzas from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
14 Optional: If you have any Nebraskan friends who couldn’t join you for this culinary adventure, give them a call and share your success. Just remember, no gloating allowed!

Enjoy your homemade Runzas straight from the heart of Nebraska! 🌽🍔🥬
