Ingredients:

  • 2 packets dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2/3 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 stick butter, melted (for brushing)
  • 12 little pinky-sized smoked sausage links (or spicy sausage links)
  • Optional: cheese, jalapeno slices

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine the yeast with water. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter, shortening, and sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  3. Mix in the egg yolks, milk, and salt until well combined.
  4. Stir in the dissolved yeast and flour until thoroughly blended into a soft dough.
  5. Cover the dough with a towel and set it aside to rise until it doubles in size, approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  6. Grease a baking sheet.
  7. Pinch off pieces of dough about the size of a golf ball, flatten slightly, and transfer them to the baking sheet, ensuring they’re at least 1 inch apart.
  8. Liberally brush the dough balls with melted butter and set them aside to double in size again, about 45 minutes to one hour.
  9. Gently indent the top of the dough with your thumb, creating a fairly deep impression.
  10. Place a little pinky-sized smoked sausage link (you can also add cheese or jalapeno slices) in the indent and fold the kolache over the sausage, sealing it.
  11. Bake in a preheated 425°F (220°C) oven for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Immediately brush butter on the top of the kolaches.
  13. Enjoy these delightful Homemade Sausage Kolaches as soon as they are cool enough to handle!
