Spiced Beef Fried Rice (Nasi Goreng Rempah Sapi) Recipe

Ingredients

  • 100-150 grams beef (preferably from the rump cut)
  • 2 plates of cooked rice (Basmati rice recommended, as per previous recipes)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 onion
  • 1 garlic clove

For Homemade Spice Blend:

  • 3 shallots
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 2 red chilies
  • A pinch of turmeric (optional)

Extra Seasonings:

  • Curry powder (I used Indian curry powder)
  • 1.5 tablespoons soy sauce
  • Sliced ginger or galangal (to taste)
  • A few bay leaves, kaffir lime leaves, or curry leaves (if available)
  • Half a stalk of lemongrass (optional, I didn’t use it)
  • Coconut milk or cream (to taste)
  • Sliced bird’s eye chilies (for those who like it spicy)
  • Salt, sugar, black pepper, and a bit of beef seasoning

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef:

    • Cut the beef into small pieces and season with salt and pepper. Let it marinate briefly.
  2. Prepare the Spice Blend:

    • If making the homemade spice blend, blend the shallots, garlic, red chilies, and a pinch of turmeric (if using) until smooth.
  3. Cook the Beef:

    • Heat a pan with a small amount of oil. Sauté the onion and homemade spice blend until fragrant.
    • Add the marinated beef to the pan and cook until browned and fully cooked. Season with a bit of salt, pepper, and soy sauce. Stir well to combine.
  4. Add the Egg:

    • Crack the egg into the pan and stir it into the beef mixture, cooking until the egg is fully cooked and mixed in with the beef.
  5. Fry the Rice:

    • Add the cooked rice to the pan. Mix thoroughly with the beef and egg mixture.
    • If using instant spice blend, mix it with coconut milk or cream to make it slightly liquid and add it to the rice. For homemade spice blend users, just add a bit of coconut milk or cream.
  6. Season and Flavor:

    • Add the remaining seasonings: ginger or galangal slices, bay leaves, kaffir lime leaves, curry powder, and sliced bird’s eye chilies. Adjust with a bit of sugar and mix well.
    • Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  7. Finish and Serve:

    • Cook the fried rice until all ingredients are well combined and aromatic.
    • Remove from heat and serve warm.

Enjoy this delightful and fragrant Spiced Beef Fried Rice, perfect for a hearty meal.
