Description

This delightful Twice Baked Picnic Bread recipe is perfect for outdoor gatherings or cozy afternoons spent watching sports. It pairs wonderfully with a refreshing fruit salad featuring chopped apples, oranges, and bananas. Packed with savory flavors and hearty ingredients, it’s sure to be a hit at any lunch or snack time spread!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup fresh mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup ham, sliced
  • 1/4 cup tomatoes, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons sweet basil, chopped
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C).

  2. Cook Mushrooms: In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the fresh mushrooms and cook until they are slightly softened, which should take about 2-3 minutes. Drain the cooked mushrooms in a colander.

  3. Prepare Bread: Using a serrated knife, carefully slice off the top of the bread loaf and set it aside. Hollow out the inside of the loaf, leaving about 1/2 inch of bread inside the crust. Save the crumbs for another use.

  4. Layer Ingredients: Line the bottom and sides of the hollowed loaf with half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Next, layer the sliced ham over the cheese, followed by the drained mushrooms and tomato slices. Sprinkle with chopped sweet basil and arrange the sliced green onions on top. Season the layers with salt and pepper to taste.

  5. Finish Assembly: Cover the layered ingredients with the remaining shredded cheddar cheese, pressing down firmly to pack the filling. Fill the loaf generously, as there may be some shrinkage during baking. Place the reserved top of the bread loaf back on and press down gently to secure.

  6. Bake: Transfer the assembled loaf onto a baking sheet. Brush the surface with melted butter, then cover the loaf loosely with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

  7. Serve: Once baked, remove the loaf from the oven. For picnics, wrap the loaf securely in foil for transport, or simply serve it warm. Cut into wedges and enjoy the delicious flavors of this Twice Baked Picnic Bread!
