Perfect for serving as a main dish or a side, it encapsulates the essence of Indonesian cuisine with its rich flavors and textures.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients Quantity
Long green beans (kacang panjang) 7 pcs, sliced to preference
Tempeh 1 piece (medium-sized), diced into cubes
Seasoning Ingredients Quantity
Shallots (bawang merah) 4 cloves
Garlic (bawang putih) 2 cloves
Red curly chili (cabe merah keriting) 2 pcs
Bird’s eye chili (cabe rawit) 4 pcs
Candlenut (kemiri) 1 piece
Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) 2 tablespoons
Cooking oil 3 tablespoons
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste
Fried shallots (bawang goreng) for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tempeh: Begin by frying the diced tempeh in a pan with a little oil over medium heat until it turns golden brown but is not fully cooked. Once done, remove it from the pan and allow it to drain on a paper towel. After it has cooled slightly, mix it with 1 teaspoon of kecap manis for added flavor.

  2. Make the Spice Paste: In a blender or mortar and pestle, combine the shallots, garlic, red curly chili, bird’s eye chili, and candlenut. Blend or pound the ingredients into a smooth paste.

  3. Sauté the Spice Paste: Heat 3 tablespoons of cooking oil in the same pan over medium heat. Add the spice paste to the pan and sauté until it becomes fragrant, stirring frequently to prevent burning.

  4. Combine Ingredients: Once the spice mixture is aromatic, add the marinated tempeh to the pan. Stir well to ensure the tempeh is coated in the spices.

  5. Add the Green Beans: Toss in the sliced long green beans that have been washed thoroughly. Pour in the remaining kecap manis, along with salt and pepper to taste.

  6. Cook Thoroughly: Stir all the ingredients together, allowing them to cook until the green beans are tender but still crisp, which should take about 5-7 minutes. Be sure to keep stirring to ensure even cooking.

  7. Serve: Once cooked, transfer the Tumis Tempe Kacang Panjang Kecap Manis to a serving plate. Garnish with crispy fried shallots for an added crunch and layer of flavor.
