Beef Teriyaki Ala Hokben and Tora-Tora (Teriyaki Beef)

Indulge in the savory goodness of Teriyaki Beef with this delightful recipe inspired by Hokben and Tora-Tora. This dish features tender beef simmered in a rich blend of teriyaki sauce, oyster sauce, and soy sauce, with aromatic garlic, ginger, and a hint of sesame oil for that perfect balance of flavors. Ideal for a quick yet satisfying meal, this recipe will soon become a favorite in your culinary repertoire.

Ingredients

  • 750 grams of beef, cleaned and cut into strips
  • 2 tablespoons of basic garlic seasoning (from a previous recipe)
  • 2 cm piece of ginger, finely grated
  • 8 tablespoons of teriyaki sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: Start by washing the beef thoroughly. Cut it into long strips, then wash it again to remove any residual blood. This ensures a cleaner taste and better texture.

  2. Marinate the Beef: Place the cut beef in a bowl and pour 6 tablespoons of teriyaki sauce over it. Let it marinate for approximately 15 minutes to infuse the flavors.

  3. Cook the Garlic and Ginger: Heat a pan over medium heat and add a small amount of oil. Sauté the basic garlic seasoning until it becomes fragrant. Add the finely grated ginger and continue to cook until the mixture is aromatic.

  4. Add the Beef: Increase the heat to medium-high and add the marinated beef to the pan. Cover the pan tightly to allow the beef to cook in its own juices. There is no need to add additional water; if the liquid evaporates, you may add a small amount to prevent burning. In this case, we’ll be using a tightly covered pan to retain moisture.

  5. Season and Simmer: Once the beef is partially cooked, stir in the remaining teriyaki sauce, oyster sauce, soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, and sesame oil. Mix well to ensure the beef is evenly coated with the sauce. Cover the pan again and let the beef simmer until it becomes tender.

  6. Adjust the Flavor: Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If the dish needs more salt or sweetness, adjust with additional soy sauce or sweet soy sauce. For further enhancement, you may add a pinch of sugar or salt as needed.

  7. Add the Onion: Once the beef is tender, add the sliced onion to the pan. Let it cook until the onions are slightly softened but still retain a bit of crispness. This will add a fresh, crunchy texture to the dish.

  8. Serve: Once everything is cooked to your liking, remove the pan from heat. Serve the Teriyaki Beef hot over steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Enjoy this easy and flavorful Teriyaki Beef recipe that’s perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner. The combination of sweet and savory flavors, along with tender beef, makes it a truly satisfying dish.
