Tomato Dumplings Recipe

🍅 Description: The wonderful fresh tomato taste of the sauce complements these light savory dumplings. They make a perfect side dish for a meal with beef. My family enjoys them very much!

  • Cook Time: 25 minutes
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Servings: 6

Ingredients:

Amount Ingredient
1/2 Onion
1/4 Green pepper
1/4 Celery
1/4 Butter
1 Bay leaf
1 Can of tomatoes (diced)
1 Tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 Teaspoon dried basil
1/2 Teaspoon salt
1/4 Teaspoon pepper
1 Cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 Teaspoons baking powder
1/2 Teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon butter (cold, diced)
2/3 Cup fresh parsley (chopped)
1 Cup milk

Instructions:

  1. Saute Vegetables: In a medium skillet, saute the onion, green pepper, and celery in butter over medium heat until they become tender.

  2. Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: To the skillet, add the bay leaf, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine all the flavors. Cover the skillet and let it simmer for about 5 to 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

  3. Prepare Dumpling Mixture: While the tomato mixture simmers, it’s time to make the dumplings. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold, diced butter using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Add Parsley and Milk: Stir in the chopped fresh parsley into the flour mixture. Gradually pour in the milk, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.

  5. Form Dumplings: Using a spoon or a cookie scoop, drop the dumpling dough by tablespoonfuls into six mounds on top of the bubbling tomato mixture in the skillet.

  6. Simmer: Cover the skillet tightly with a lid and let the dumplings simmer for 12 to 15 minutes. The dumplings should puff up and become light and fluffy. To check for doneness, insert a toothpick into a dumpling—if it comes out clean, they’re ready!

  7. Serve: Remove and discard the bay leaf from the tomato mixture. Serve the tomato dumplings immediately while they’re hot and steamy.

These Tomato Dumplings are a delightful combination of savory, fluffy dumplings and a rich, tomatoey sauce. 🍅 They make a perfect accompaniment to beef dishes or as a comforting meal on their own. Enjoy the fresh flavors and the cozy feeling they bring to your table!
