Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup cheese, shredded
  • 3/4 cup green onion, chopped
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup cooked turkey or chicken, shredded
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Crescent rolls (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).

  2. Prepare the Filling:

    • In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded turkey or chicken, shredded cheese, chopped mushrooms, chopped green onion, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper. Mix until well blended.
  3. If Using Crescent Rolls:

    • Take the crescent roll dough out of the tube.
    • Flatten each triangle as much as possible, then spoon the filling into the center and fold over the corners.
    • Proceed to step 12.
  4. If Making Dough from Scratch:

    • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • Add the oil and cut it in until the mixture resembles coarse meal.
    • Pour in the milk all at once and stir until it forms a soft ball of dough.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, turn the dough out and knead lightly 20-25 times.

  6. Roll out the dough until it reaches a thickness of 1/8 to 1/4 inch.

  7. Cut the dough into 4-inch squares or rounds.

  8. Place about 2 1/2 tablespoons of the filling in the center of each dough square or round.

  9. Fold each square or round over the filling and seal the edges. A little water can be used to moisten the edges for easier sealing.

  10. Place the filled turnovers on an ungreased cookie sheet.

  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the turnovers are light brown at the edges.

  12. Serve warm and enjoy your delicious Chicken or Turkey Popovers!
