Bendekaayi Gojju (Okra Curry) Recipe

Description:
Bendekaayi Gojju, also known as Sasiva Gojju, is a flavorful South Indian curry that is perfect for your everyday meal. This curry has a balance of sour, spicy, and sweet flavors, making it a delightful side dish. It pairs wonderfully with roti or rice.

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams ladyfinger (okra), sliced thinly
  • A few curry leaves, chopped
  • 3 dried red chillies
  • Oil, as needed
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • Salt, to taste

For the paste:

  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 green chillies, chopped
  • 3 sprigs of coriander leaves, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon roasted gram dal (chana dal)
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • 1 tablespoon jaggery

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Instructions:

  1. To make the paste, combine the grated coconut, mustard seeds, green chillies, coriander leaves, roasted gram dal, tamarind paste, and jaggery in a mixer grinder. Blend it into a smooth paste and set it aside.

  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Allow them to splutter for about 10 seconds.

  3. Add the curry leaves and dried red chillies, and sauté for 20 seconds.

  4. Add the sliced ladyfinger (okra) and sauté for 3-4 minutes until it softens slightly.

  5. Add the prepared paste to the pan, followed by 1 cup of water. Stir everything well, bringing it to a boil.

  6. Season with salt and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend together.

  7. Serve your delicious Bendekaayi Gojju with rice, Chow Chow Thoran, and Beetroot Pachadi for a complete South Indian lunch!
