  • Recipe Yield: 6 dozen cookies

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup margarine
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar (divided)
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (for meringue)
  • Candied citron peel
  • Candied cherries

Instructions:

Step Description
1 Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
2 In a mixing bowl, combine butter, margarine, shortening, 1 cup sugar, and orange zest. Mix thoroughly.
3 Add eggs to the mixture and blend well.
4 Gradually incorporate flour into the mixture until fully combined.
5 Shape the dough into ropes, each about 6 inches long, using rounded teaspoons of dough.
6 Form each rope into a circle, creating a knot-like shape, with ½ inch extending at each end.
7 Place the shaped dough on an ungreased baking sheet.
8 In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually add 2 tablespoons of sugar, one tablespoon at a time, and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
9 Brush the tops of the cookies with the prepared meringue.
10 Decorate the center of each knot with bits of candied cherries for holly berries and candied citron for leaves.
11 Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until set but not browned.
12 Remove the cookies immediately from the baking sheet after baking.

Enjoy!

These Berlinerkranzer are not only visually appealing but also irresistibly delicious. Serve them at holiday gatherings, afternoon teas, or simply enjoy them as a sweet indulgence anytime!
