Description:
My half-Sicilian husband liked these fine, but likes his mother’s recipe better. Go figure. Personally, I love the addition of currents and pine nuts and prefer these. Use these with your favorite sauce and pasta. I usually double the recipe and use 1 pound of sausage and 1 pound of ground beef. This came originally from the Epicurious website. Prep time and servings are approximate. Hope you enjoy! 😊

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons parmesan cheese
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 sweet Italian sausage link, casing removed
  • 1 tablespoon dried currants
  • 2 tablespoons pine nuts
  • Olive oil (for greasing)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Lightly oil a baking sheet to prevent the meatballs from sticking.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix together the bread crumbs and milk, then let the mixture stand for five minutes to allow the crumbs to absorb the milk.
  4. To the bread crumb mixture, add the parmesan cheese, chopped onion, chopped basil, minced garlic, egg, and ground black pepper. Mix until well combined.
  5. Remove the casing from the sweet Italian sausage link, and add the sausage meat to the bowl.
  6. Add the dried currants and pine nuts to the mixture, and blend everything together thoroughly.
  7. With wet hands to prevent sticking, form the mixture into meatballs, each about 1 1/4 inches in diameter.
  8. Place the meatballs on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced about one inch apart to allow for even cooking.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven until the meatballs are light brown and cooked through, approximately 30 minutes.
  10. Once cooked, remove the meatballs from the oven and serve them hot with your favorite sauce and pasta.

These Sicilian meatballs are bursting with flavor from the blend of sweet Italian sausage, aromatic basil, and the delightful addition of currants and pine nuts. They make for a hearty and satisfying meal, perfect for lunch, dinner, or as a savory snack any time of the day. Enjoy the taste of Sicily with every bite! 🇮🇹
