Sapi Lada Hitam: Savory Black Pepper Beef Stir-Fry

Ingredients:

  • 300 grams beef sirloin (sliced thinly against the grain for tenderness)
  • 1/2 red bell pepper (diced)
  • 1/2 green bell pepper (diced)
  • 1 onion (sliced thinly)
  • 5 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
  • Black pepper (to taste)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Sugar (to taste)
  • Sweet soy sauce (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)
  • Water (as needed)
  • Cornstarch (to thicken the sauce)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef: Begin by slicing the beef sirloin thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness. Place the slices in a bowl and season with sweet soy sauce, salt, and black pepper. Allow the beef to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.

  2. Prepare the Vegetables: While the beef is marinating, finely chop the garlic, dice the red and green bell peppers, and slice the onion thinly.

  3. Cook the Garlic: Heat a small amount of oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and sauté until fragrant, but not browned.

  4. Cook the Beef: Add the marinated beef to the skillet with the garlic. Stir-fry until the beef changes color and is nearly cooked through.

  5. Add the Onion: Incorporate the sliced onion into the skillet and continue to stir-fry until the onion becomes tender and translucent.

  6. Add Seasonings: Pour a small amount of water into the skillet to create a bit of sauce. Add the sweet soy sauce, oyster sauce, and black pepper. If using, drizzle in the sesame oil for additional flavor.

  7. Add the Peppers: Once the beef is cooked through, add the diced red and green bell peppers. Stir well to combine.

  8. Thicken the Sauce: Mix a small amount of cornstarch with water to create a slurry. Stir this into the skillet to thicken the sauce to your desired consistency.

  9. Adjust the Seasoning: Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or sweet soy sauce if needed.

  10. Serve: Once everything is well combined and the sauce has thickened, your Sapi Lada Hitam is ready to serve. Enjoy this flavorful black pepper beef stir-fry with steamed rice or your favorite side dishes.
