Tumis Kacang Panjang & Tempe: A Flavorful Stir-Fry Delight

Embrace the delicious flavors of Indonesian cuisine with this simple yet satisfying dish of Tumis Kacang Panjang & Tempe. This vibrant stir-fry combines the crispness of long green beans (kacang panjang) and the earthy richness of tempeh, enhanced by a fragrant blend of spices. Perfect for a quick lunch or a comforting dinner, this recipe showcases the beauty of fresh ingredients and traditional flavors.

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Long green beans (kacang panjang) 1 bunch (approximately 200 grams)
Tempeh 1 package (about 250 grams)
Garlic (optional) 2 cloves
Red onions 2 cloves
Candlenuts (kemiri) 2 pieces
Chilies (lombok) 7 pieces (adjust to taste)
Chicken flavor seasoning 2 teaspoons (Masako brand preferred)
Cooking oil As needed (for sautéing)
Salt A pinch (for seasoning)
Water 1/2 cup (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Preparation of Ingredients:
Begin by trimming the long green beans to your desired length. Rinse them thoroughly under running water until they are clean. Cut the tempeh into small cubes, ensuring they are easy to stir-fry.

  2. Blending the Spice Mix:
In a mortar and pestle or blender, combine the chilies, garlic, red onions, and candlenuts. Add a pinch of salt to help with the grinding process, and blend until you achieve a smooth paste. This aromatic mix is the heart of the dish.

  3. Sautéing the Spice Paste:
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the blended spice paste to the pan. Stir-fry the mixture until it becomes fragrant, releasing its enticing aroma.

  4. Cooking the Long Green Beans:
Next, add the prepared long green beans to the pan. Toss them well to coat with the spice mixture, ensuring they absorb all the flavors. Continue to stir-fry for a few minutes until the beans start to soften.

  5. Adding the Tempeh:
Once the green beans are slightly tender, introduce the cubed tempeh to the pan. Mix everything together gently, allowing the tempeh to soak in the flavors.

  6. Creating a Flavorful Sauce:
Pour in 1/2 cup of water to the pan, which will help steam the beans and tempeh while melding the flavors. Cover the pan and let it simmer for a few minutes, allowing the water to reduce slightly.

  7. Seasoning the Dish:
After the vegetables are cooked through, sprinkle 2 teaspoons of chicken flavor seasoning (Masako) over the stir-fry. Stir well to ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed throughout the dish.

  8. Serving:
Once everything is well combined and the dish is heated through, remove the pan from the heat. Serve the Tumis Kacang Panjang & Tempe on a plate, and enjoy it warm, either on its own or accompanied by steamed rice.
