2 packs | Active dry yeast |
1/2 cup | Water |
1 cup | Milk |
1/2 cup | Sugar |
1/4 cup | Butter |
1/4 cup | Margarine |
1 tsp | Vanilla extract |
1/2 tsp | Salt |
1/4 tsp | Ground nutmeg |
6 1/2 – 7 cups | All-purpose flour |
4 | Eggs |
1/2 cup | Dried currants |
1/2 cup | Raisins |
2 tbsp | Water |
1 | Egg yolk |
1 cup | Confectioners’ sugar |
1 tbsp | Milk |
1/2 tsp | Vanilla extract |
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in water.
- Add milk, sugar, butter, margarine, vanilla extract, salt, nutmeg, and 3 cups of flour; beat until smooth.
- Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Stir in the currants, raisins, and enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
- Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it once to grease the top.
- Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Punch the dough down and shape it into 30 balls.
- Place the balls on greased baking sheets.
- Use a sharp knife to cut a cross on the top of each roll.
- Cover the rolls and let them rise again until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
- In a small bowl, beat together water and egg yolk. Brush this mixture over the rolls.
- Bake the buns at 375°F (190°C) for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow the buns to cool on wire racks.
Icing:
- In a bowl, combine confectioners’ sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Drizzle the icing over the cooled rolls.
