Spicy Black Pepper Beef Stir-Fry

Black Pepper Beef (Sapi Lada Hitam)

Ingredients:

  • 250 grams beef (inner cut), thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce (kecap asin)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • Spice Paste:
    • 5 cloves garlic
    • 4 shallots
    • 1 tablespoon black peppercorns (ground separately)
  • Garnish:
    • 4 red chilies, thinly sliced
    • 4 green chilies, thinly sliced
    • 1/2 ripe tomato, diced
    • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Spice Paste:
    Begin by grinding the garlic, shallots, and black peppercorns into a smooth paste. This will be the aromatic base for your dish.

  2. Cook the Spice Paste:
    Heat a little oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the spice paste and sauté until fragrant and golden.

  3. Add the Beef:
    Once the spice paste is aromatic, add the thinly sliced beef to the pan. Stir well to coat the beef with the spice paste.

  4. Season and Simmer:
    Sprinkle the ground black pepper over the beef. Add the oyster sauce and pour in enough water to lightly cover the beef. Dissolve the cornstarch in a small amount of water and add it to the pan to thicken the sauce slightly. Allow the mixture to simmer over medium heat until the beef is tender and the sauce has reduced.

  5. Add Soy Sauces:
    When the beef is cooked and the sauce has thickened, stir in the sweet soy sauce and soy sauce. Mix well to combine all the flavors.

  6. Incorporate Onions:
    Add the thinly sliced onion to the pan. Stir frequently until the onions soften and become translucent.

  7. Add Garnishes:
    Finally, stir in the sliced red and green chilies, diced tomato, and additional onions. Mix well and cook for a few more minutes until the garnishes are slightly softened.

  8. Serve:
    The Black Pepper Beef is now ready to be served. Enjoy this flavorful dish with steamed rice or noodles.
