This delectable Indonesian dish, Sapi Lada Hitam, combines tender beef with vibrant vegetables and a savory sauce, creating a flavor profile that’s both rich and satisfying. The fusion of black pepper, oyster sauce, and soy sauce brings a delightful heat and depth to the dish, while the vegetables add freshness and crunch. Perfect for a quick and flavorful meal, this recipe is a must-try for any culinary enthusiast.

Ingredients:

  • 250 grams beef (preferably sirloin or tenderloin), cut into cubes
  • 1/2 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/4 red bell pepper, cut into cubes
  • 1/4 green bell pepper, cut into cubes
  • 4 broccoli florets
  • 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 stalk green onion, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon chicken bouillon powder
  • Water, as needed
  • Margarine or cooking oil, for sautéing

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Beef: Begin by boiling the beef cubes in a pot of boiling water until they are partially tender. Once they are cooked to a desired tenderness, remove them from the water and let them cool slightly. Cut the beef into bite-sized cubes.

  2. Sauté Aromatics: In a pan, heat a small amount of margarine or cooking oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until they are fragrant and softened.

  3. Simmer the Beef: Pour approximately 300 ml of water into the pan with the onions and garlic. Add the beef cubes to the pan. Stir to combine.

  4. Add Flavorings: Stir in the oyster sauce, chicken bouillon powder, sweet soy sauce, sesame oil, and whole black peppercorns. Cover the pan and allow the flavors to meld and infuse into the beef. Simmer until the beef is fully tender and the sauce has thickened.

  5. Incorporate Vegetables: Add the red and green bell peppers, broccoli florets, and chopped green onion to the pan. Stir well to ensure the vegetables are evenly distributed and coated with the sauce. Continue to cook until the vegetables are tender but still crisp.

  6. Taste and Adjust: Check the seasoning and adjust to taste if necessary. Once the beef is tender and the vegetables are cooked to your liking, remove the pan from heat.

  7. Serve: Transfer the Sapi Lada Hitam to a serving dish. Enjoy it hot with steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal.

This Sapi Lada Hitam recipe showcases a delightful balance of savory, spicy, and sweet flavors, enhanced by the crunchy texture of fresh vegetables. It’s a wonderful choice for a quick weeknight dinner or a special occasion.
