Ingredients:

  • 250g channa dal (split chickpeas)
  • 2 red bell peppers
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 onion
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 3/4 bay leaf
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp parsley
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 1 tsp garlic paste
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1/4 cup oil for cooking

Instructions:

Step Instruction
1 Soak chana dal in water for a few hours prior to use.
2 Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, bay leaf, cinnamon stick, ginger paste, garlic paste, and cloves. Saute until fragrant.
3 Add chopped onions and saute until translucent.
4 Stir in chopped tomatoes and curry leaves. Add the soaked chana dal to the pan along with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil.
5 Cook covered on medium-high heat for 15-20 minutes or until the chana dal softens, adding boiling water as needed to maintain the desired consistency.
6 Once the chana dal begins to soften, add sliced red bell peppers (or diced bottle gourd if preferred). Mix well and continue cooking until both the dal and bell peppers are tender.
7 Sprinkle garam masala, chili powder, turmeric, and coriander powder. Stir to combine.
8 Garnish with chopped cilantro.
9 Serve hot with rice or paratha. Enjoy your delicious Chana Dal with Bell Pepper!

Cooking Tips:

  • For a variation, substitute red bell peppers with bottle gourd (lauki) for a different texture and taste profile.
  • Adjust the spice levels according to your preference.
  • Ensure to use boiling water when adding to the dal during cooking to maintain the temperature and cooking consistency.

This recipe yields approximately 6 servings, making it ideal for family meals or gatherings. It’s a nutritious dish that pairs well with both rice and Indian breads like parathas. Enjoy the rich flavors and wholesome goodness of this Chana Dal with Bell Pepper!
