Tahu Bakso Geprek Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 box of Tahu Bakso (Indonesian tofu meatballs)
- Bird’s eye chilies (adjust quantity based on desired spiciness)
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 1 tomato (optional)
- Salt to taste
- Sugar to taste
- A pinch of black pepper
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Chili Paste: In a mortar and pestle, coarsely grind together the bird’s eye chilies, garlic, and optional tomato. Aim for a rough texture rather than a fine paste to retain some bite.
-
Season the Paste: Add salt, sugar, and black pepper to the chili mixture according to your taste preferences. Adjust the seasoning as needed to balance the flavors.
-
Fry the Tahu Bakso: Heat a little oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry the Tahu Bakso until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
-
Penyet (Smash) the Tahu Bakso: Gently flatten the fried Tahu Bakso using a pestle or the back of a spoon. This step gives it the signature ‘geprek’ or smashed look.
-
Combine: Toss the smashed Tahu Bakso with the prepared chili paste, ensuring each piece is well coated.
-
Serve: Enjoy the Tahu Bakso Geprek immediately while it’s still warm. Adjust the level of spiciness according to your preference.
Notes: Feel free to customize the level of spiciness by varying the amount of bird’s eye chilies used. This dish pairs wonderfully with steamed rice or as a flavorful side. Happy cooking!
