Spicy Crispy Tilapia with Garlic and Chilies

Mujair Oseng Cabe: Spicy Fried Tilapia

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg tilapia (mujair)
  • For Marinating the Fish:
    • 2 cloves garlic
    • 1/2 teaspoon coriander seeds
    • 1/2 thumb-sized piece of turmeric
    • Salt to taste
  • For Stir-Frying:
    • 7 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
    • 7 shallots, thinly sliced
    • 3 red chilies, sliced
    • 3 green chilies, sliced
    • 2 tomatoes, chopped
    • Birdโ€™s eye chilies (as desired, for extra heat)
    • Salt to taste
    • Sugar to taste
    • Cooking oil (for frying and stir-frying)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fish:

    • Clean the tilapia thoroughly and make shallow cuts along the back. Rinse well.
    • In a bowl, combine garlic, coriander seeds, turmeric, and salt. Blend into a smooth paste.
    • Marinate the fish in this paste for about 15 minutes.
  2. Fry the Fish:

    • Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
    • Fry the marinated fish until it is golden brown and cooked through. Drain and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Stir-Fry:

    • In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed. Sautรฉ the garlic, shallots, red and green chilies until fragrant and golden.
    • Add the chopped tomatoes and stir until they start to soften.
    • If desired, add birdโ€™s eye chilies for additional heat.
    • Season with salt and sugar to taste, and add a small amount of water if necessary to create a slightly saucy consistency. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  4. Combine and Serve:

    • Pour the stir-fried mixture over the crispy fish.
    • Serve immediately while hot for the best flavor.
