Spicy Shredded Mackerel (Suwir Tongkol Pedas)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg Mackerel (Ikan Tongkol)
  • 3 Kaffir Lime Leaves (daun jeruk)
  • 2 Stalks Lemongrass (buah serai)
  • Spice Paste (Bumbu Halus):
    • 4 Cloves Garlic (bawang putih)
    • 5 Shallots (bawang merah)
    • 3 Candlenuts (optional) (kemiri)
    • 2 cm Turmeric (kunyit)
    • 2 cm Ginger (jahe)
    • Chilies (adjust to taste for spiciness)

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Spice Paste: Blend the garlic, shallots, candlenuts (if using), turmeric, ginger, and chilies into a smooth paste. This should take about 2 minutes.
  2. Slice the Kaffir Lime Leaves: Thinly slice the kaffir lime leaves and set aside.
  3. Cook the Mackerel: Fry the mackerel until it is half-cooked. Once cooled slightly, use a fork to shred the fish into small pieces, discarding the bones.
  4. Sauté the Spice Paste: In a pan, heat a small amount of oil and sauté the spice paste until it becomes fragrant.
  5. Combine and Cook: Add the shredded mackerel, kaffir lime leaves, and lemongrass to the pan. Season with salt and sugar to taste.
  6. Taste and Adjust: Sample the dish and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  7. Serve: Your Spicy Shredded Mackerel (Suwir Tongkol Pedas) is ready to be served. Enjoy it with a side of steamed rice for a delicious and satisfying meal.
