This Southern Special Recipe, originally from Nathalie Dupree, has undergone some delightful alterations, resulting in a flavorful dish that’s bound to tantalize your taste buds. Dive into this sumptuous stew and relish the rich combination of hot sausage and succulent shrimp, perfectly complemented by a medley of vegetables and zesty spices. Whether you’re hosting a potluck, craving a spicy summer treat, or simply seeking a hearty weeknight meal, Frogmore Stew is the answer to your culinary desires.

Ingredients:

  • 3 hot Italian sausage links
  • 1 1/2 lbs new potatoes
  • 2 1/2 cloves garlic
  • 16 onions
  • 4 lemons
  • 8 sprigs parsley
  • 2 cups cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 ears corn
  • 3 dashes Tabasco sauce
  • 16 large shrimp
  • 5 quarts water

Instructions:

Step Description
1 In a heavy stockpot, brown the hot Italian sausage links until they are cooked through.
2 Remove the cooked sausage from the pot and set aside for later.
3 Add 5 quarts of water to the stockpot and bring it to a vigorous boil over high heat.
4 Toss in the new potatoes, garlic, and onions, and bring the pot back to a boil.
5 Cover the pot and let the ingredients cook for 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
6 Once the potatoes are tender, add back the cooked sausage along with hot peppers, sliced lemons, Old Bay seasoning, chopped parsley, and cider vinegar.
7 Cover the pot again and let the stew simmer for an additional 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to further infuse.
8 Uncover the pot and season the stew with salt and black pepper to taste. Add the ears of corn and bring the stew back to a boil.
9 Finally, introduce the Tabasco sauce and the large shrimp to the bubbling pot, and poach them until the shrimp are cooked through, which should take no more than 5 minutes.
10 Once the shrimp are perfectly pink and tender, remove the lemon halves and the tied parsley from the stew.
11 Now comes the fun part! You have options on how to serve your Frogmore Stew. You can ladle out a generous portion of shrimp, sausage, and vegetables onto a plate, accompanied by a side of the flavorful broth in a bowl. Alternatively, you can reserve the broth for another culinary creation, or you can choose to serve everything together.
12 For an authentic experience, consider straining the stew and serving it on paper plates placed atop newspaper, providing a convenient spot for guests to discard shrimp shells and corn cobs while relishing every delicious bite.

Indulge in the delightful medley of flavors and textures that make Frogmore Stew a beloved Southern classic with a spicy twist. This versatile dish is sure to become a favorite for potlucks, summer gatherings, or cozy weeknight dinners. Enjoy the warmth and satisfaction of every spoonful as you savor the essence of Southern hospitality in each bite!
