Pindang Tenggiri Asem Pedas (Spicy and Sour Mackerel Soup)

Pindang Tenggiri Asem Pedas is a delightful Indonesian dish that showcases the vibrant flavors of sour tamarind and spicy chili, combined with tender mackerel. This recipe blends aromatic spices and tangy belimbing wuluh (starfruit) to create a robustly flavored soup that’s perfect for warming up on a chilly day. Here’s how to prepare this delectable dish:

Ingredients

  • 1 large mackerel (Ikan Tenggiri), cleaned and cut into chunks
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 4 shallots, finely minced
  • 10 red curly chilies (Cabe Merah Keriting), finely minced (adjust to taste for spiciness)
  • 2 thumb-sized pieces of turmeric, peeled and finely minced
  • A pinch of shrimp paste (Terasi), finely minced
  • 8 pieces belimbing wuluh (starfruit), sliced into rounds
  • Tamarind paste, to taste
  • 3 kaffir lime leaves (Daun Jeruk Purut)
  • Salt, sugar, black pepper, and Royco seasoning, to taste
  • Water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Spices: Heat a bit of oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the minced garlic, shallots, red chilies, turmeric, and shrimp paste. Sauté until the mixture becomes fragrant and the oil starts to separate from the spices.

  2. Add Liquid and Flavorings: Pour in enough water to create a soup base, and stir in the tamarind paste, belimbing wuluh, and red chilies. Bring the mixture to a boil.

  3. Cook the Mackerel: Gently add the mackerel pieces to the pot. Season with salt, sugar, black pepper, and Royco seasoning according to your taste preferences. Let the soup return to a boil and cook until the mackerel is tender and fully cooked.

  4. Final Touches: Add the kaffir lime leaves and stir well. Adjust seasoning if necessary, and allow the soup to simmer for a few more minutes.

  5. Serve: Ladle the hot Pindang Tenggiri Asem Pedas into bowls and serve immediately. Enjoy the soup with steamed rice or on its own as a hearty and flavorful dish.

This Pindang Tenggiri Asem Pedas combines the perfect balance of spicy, sour, and savory flavors, making it a delightful addition to your culinary repertoire.
