Orek Tempe with Green Chili

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Tempeh, diced into small cubes 1 block
Shallots 4 cloves, thinly sliced
Garlic 2 cloves, thinly sliced
Green chilies (lombok ijo) 3 pieces, sliced diagonally
Cooking oil A small amount (for sautéing)
Salt To taste
Sugar To taste
Flavor enhancer (optional) To taste
Sweet soy sauce To taste

Instructions

  1. Fry the Tempeh
Heat oil in a pan and fry the diced tempeh until golden brown, but do not let it get too crispy. Once done, remove and set it aside.

  2. Prepare the Aromatics
In the same pan, leave a small amount of oil, and sauté the sliced shallots and garlic until they become fragrant and slightly golden.

  3. Add the Green Chilies
Add the sliced green chilies to the pan and continue sautéing until the chilies release their aroma and slightly soften.

  4. Combine with the Tempeh
Add the fried tempeh back into the pan and stir well to coat the tempeh with the aromatics and chilies.

  5. Season the Dish
Pour in a sufficient amount of sweet soy sauce, and sprinkle in salt, sugar, and a flavor enhancer if using. Stir everything together and adjust the seasoning to taste.

  6. Cook Through
Let everything cook together for a few more minutes until all the flavors are well absorbed by the tempeh.

  7. Serve
Your Orek Tempe with Green Chili is ready to be served as a delicious side dish with rice or as part of a larger meal.

Tips:

  • You can adjust the spiciness by adding more green chilies or substituting with spicier varieties like bird’s eye chili.
  • If you prefer a sweeter dish, feel free to add more sweet soy sauce to taste.
