Tempe Goreng Isi Sambal (Tempe Mercon)

Ingredients

Main Ingredients Quantity
Tempe 1 papan
Filling Ingredients
Red chilies 1 handful
Garlic 2 cloves
Shallots 2 bulbs
Green onion (sliced) 1 stalk (optional)
Batter Ingredients
All-purpose flour 5 tablespoons
Cornstarch 5 tablespoons
Garlic (minced) 1 clove
Water as needed (to thin)
Salt to taste
Sugar to taste
Ground pepper to taste
Ground coriander to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tempe: Cut the tempe into thick slices, about 12 pieces total. Make a slit in the middle of each slice, ensuring you don’t cut all the way through. Set aside.

  2. Make the Filling: In a pan, fry the red chilies, garlic, shallots, and green onions until fragrant. Remove from heat and season with salt and sugar. Mash the mixture and fill each tempe slice with the sambal filling.

  3. Prepare the Batter: In a bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, minced garlic, and enough water to create a slightly runny batter. The consistency can be adjusted to your preference, and using just all-purpose flour is perfectly fine.

  4. Fry the Tempe: Dip each stuffed tempe slice into the batter and fry in hot oil until golden brown and crispy.

  5. Serve and Enjoy: These spicy tempe slices are perfect for snacking, no extra sauce needed, as they are already bursting with flavor. Enjoy your delicious treat!

This Tempe Goreng Isi Sambal is not just a delightful snack but also a testament to the rich flavors of Indonesian cuisine. Happy cooking!
