Thai Spicy Basil Beef
Ingredients
- 500 grams sirloin or chuck beef, trimmed of connective tissue and fat, thinly sliced against the grain
- 5 cloves garlic, finely chopped
- 2 shallots, finely chopped
- 3 red Thai bird chilies, coarsely chopped (adjust to taste)
- 1 small red bell pepper, sliced into thin strips
- 1/2 large onion, sliced into thin strips
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce
- Ground black pepper, to taste
- 2 handfuls fresh Thai basil leaves
Marinade:
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- Ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 teaspoon chicken or mushroom powder (optional)
Instructions
-
Prepare the Beef:
Begin by trimming the beef of any connective tissue and fat. Slice it thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness. Place the beef slices between sheets of plastic wrap and gently pound them to tenderize. -
Marinate the Beef:
Combine the soy sauce, ground black pepper, and chicken or mushroom powder in a bowl. Add the sliced beef and mix thoroughly. Allow the beef to marinate for at least 30 minutes to absorb the flavors. -
Cook the Beef:
Heat a generous amount of oil in a skillet over high heat. Quickly stir-fry the marinated beef until it changes color, then remove and set aside. -
Sauté Aromatics:
In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if necessary and sauté the garlic and shallots until fragrant. -
Add Vegetables:
Add the sliced red bell pepper and chopped bird chilies to the skillet, cooking briefly until they start to soften. -
Combine Ingredients:
Toss in the sliced onion and cook until it becomes slightly tender. Return the beef to the skillet and stir well to combine with the vegetables. -
Season the Dish:
Season with fish sauce, oyster sauce, sweet soy sauce, and ground black pepper to taste. Stir-fry the mixture until the beef is cooked through and the flavors are well combined. -
Add Basil:
Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the fresh Thai basil leaves. The residual heat will wilt the basil slightly without losing its vibrant flavor. -
Serve:
Serve your Thai Spicy Basil Beef hot with a side of steamed jasmine rice and a fried egg for a complete meal.
Enjoy this flavorful and aromatic Thai dish that brings a delightful balance of spicy, savory, and sweet notes to your plate!
