-
Add the butter: Cut the butter into small pieces and add it to the flour mixture. Work the butter into the flour using your fingers until the mixture becomes crumbly.
-
Prepare the egg mixture: In a small bowl, beat the egg with a pinch of salt. Split the vanilla bean pod lengthwise, scrape out the seeds, and add them to the egg mixture.
-
Combine the mixtures: Pour the egg mixture into the flour and butter combination, stirring gently until the dough starts to come together.
-
Knead the dough: Transfer the crumbly dough onto a lightly floured surface. Use your hands to knead it into a smooth, soft dough. If the dough feels too sticky, sprinkle with a little more flour.
-
Shape the dough: Flatten the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow it to firm up.
-
Form the skulls: Once chilled, roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use a round cookie cutter (about 6 cm in diameter) to cut out shapes. For each biscuit, use the handle of a wooden spoon to create eye sockets by pressing into the dough, and then use a knife or skewer to carve two lines forming the nasal cavities.
-
Add the teeth: Take the pine nuts and gently press them into the dough to form the teeth, positioning them in a row.
-
Bake the biscuits: Arrange the skull-shaped biscuits on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 12–15 minutes or until they are golden brown around the edges.
-
Cool and serve: Once baked, remove the biscuits from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack. Once fully cooled, your Skull Biscuits are ready to enjoy!
