Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cocoa Glaze
- Begin by preparing the cocoa glaze. Sift the unsweetened cocoa powder and powdered sugar into a mixing bowl.
- Warm the water, then gradually add it to the dry ingredients, mixing continuously until smooth and spreadable.
Step 2: Prepare Licorice Strips for Decoration
- Unroll a licorice stick, and cut it into four strips about 3-4 cm long. Split each strip in half to create eight pieces.
- Using a toothpick, create four holes on one side of a cupcake, and another four on the opposite side.
- Insert the licorice strips into the holes, making it look like the legs of a monster.
Step 3: Coat the Cupcake with Cocoa Glaze
- Once the licorice strips are in place, cover the entire surface of the cupcake with a spoonful of cocoa glaze.
- Sprinkle some chocolate sprinkles (codette) on top for an extra treat.
Step 4: Create a Spider Web Design
- For a spooky spider web effect, cover the top of another cupcake with the cocoa glaze.
- Prepare royal icing (recipe provided separately) and transfer it to a piping bag.
- Pipe a spiral of icing from the center of the cupcake, working your way out to the edges.
- Using a toothpick or wooden skewer, pull lines from the center to the outside to create the spider web design.
Step 5: Make Mummy Cupcakes
- Cover a third cupcake with cocoa glaze.
- Take two round, red sugar candies and place them in the middle of the cupcake for the “eyes.”
- Fill a piping bag with royal icing and use a strip nozzle to create “bandages” by piping white icing over the entire cupcake, leaving the eyes uncovered. The cupcake will look like a mummy!
Step 6: Create Gummy Worms
- Color the marzipan using pink or red food coloring. Wear disposable gloves to handle the coloring.
- Roll out small pieces of marzipan into sticks. Cut the sticks into 5-6 cm lengths to create gummy worms.
- Place the gummy worms on top of a fourth cupcake, which has been covered in cocoa glaze and chocolate sprinkles.
- Use a wooden skewer to make two holes in the center of the cupcake, and carefully place the gummy worms inside.
Step 7: Design a Rock Star Monster Mouth
- For the “rock star” cupcake, cover a final cupcake with cocoa glaze.
- Roll out marzipan into a flat oval shape, then press it onto the center of the cupcake to form a “mouth.”
- Cut the marzipan mouth in half, and use a knife to carve out the center to make it look like a monstrous grin.
Step 8: Final Touches
- Once all cupcakes are decorated, display them as a spooky and delicious Halloween treat.
- Enjoy these “monster” cupcakes with friends and family!
