Nasi Ayam Tim: Steamed Chicken Rice Bowl

This Nasi Ayam Tim is a delightful and flavorful steamed chicken rice dish that combines savory chicken, aromatic spices, and tender rice, topped with a rich sauce. Perfect for a comforting meal, this recipe is both satisfying and simple to prepare.

Ingredients:

For the Chicken Stir-Fry:

  • 250 grams ground chicken
  • 5 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 3 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (kecap asin)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • A pinch of chicken bouillon
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon margarine

For Assembly:

  • Cooked white rice, as needed
  • Boiled quail eggs (as many as you like)

To Serve:

  • Steamed bok choy (or any preferred vegetable)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chicken Stir-Fry:

    • Heat the margarine in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and onion, cooking until fragrant and translucent.
    • Add the ground chicken to the pan. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the chicken changes color and is fully cooked.
    • Stir in the oyster sauce, sweet soy sauce, soy sauce, salt, pepper, sugar, and a pinch of chicken bouillon. Mix well to ensure the chicken is evenly coated with the sauces.
    • Pour in the water, stirring to combine. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce reduces slightly and the flavors meld together. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.
  2. Prepare the Steaming Setup:

    • Preheat your steamer. Prepare a heatproof bowl that can fit comfortably in your steamer.
  3. Assemble the Nasi Ayam Tim:

    • In the prepared bowl, place a layer of the cooked chicken mixture. Press down lightly to compact the chicken.
    • Place a boiled quail egg in the center of the chicken layer.
    • Fill the bowl with cooked white rice, pressing it down firmly to ensure it is packed tightly. Spoon 2-3 tablespoons of the chicken sauce over the top of the rice.
  4. Steam the Dish:

    • Place the bowl in the steamer. Steam over high heat for about 15 minutes, or until the rice is thoroughly heated and the flavors have melded together.
  5. Serve:

    • Carefully remove the bowl from the steamer. Serve the Nasi Ayam Tim hot, accompanied by steamed bok choy or your choice of vegetable.

Note: If you have leftover chicken stir-fry, it pairs wonderfully with egg noodles. Simply toss the noodles with the remaining chicken mixture for a quick and delicious meal!

Enjoy your Nasi Ayam Tim, a comforting and flavorful dish that is sure to satisfy!
