Nasi Tim Ayam

Ingredients:

  • 1 chicken breast fillet
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs, cut in half
  • 2 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 small piece of ginger, finely chopped
  • 1/2 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 large green bird’s eye chilies, diagonally sliced
  • 3 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 tablespoon teriyaki sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Ground pepper, to taste
  • Butter, as needed
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon heaping cornstarch
  • Cooked rice, as needed

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chicken:

    • Coarsely chop the chicken breast fillet and season with salt and ground pepper. Mix well and set aside while you prepare the other ingredients.
  2. Cook the Aromatics:

    • In a pan, melt some butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent. Next, add the finely chopped garlic and ginger, cooking until fragrant. If you like a bit of heat, add the sliced green chilies and stir for a minute.
  3. Cook the Chicken:

    • Add the chopped chicken to the pan and stir until the chicken changes color. Ensure that all the pieces are well-cooked.
  4. Make the Sauce:

    • Pour in the water, sweet soy sauce, and teriyaki sauce. Stir to combine and cook until the chicken is fully cooked through. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed.
  5. Thicken the Sauce:

    • Mix the cornstarch with a small amount of water to create a slurry. Add this mixture to the pan and stir until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
  6. Assemble and Steam:

    • Grease the bottom of a bowl or steaming mold with butter to prevent sticking. Place half of the halved hard-boiled eggs in the bottom of the bowl. Layer with the chicken and sauce, then top with a layer of cooked rice. Press the rice down firmly to compact it.
  7. Steam the Dish:

    • Cover the bowl with foil or a lid and steam for about 15 minutes. If you prefer a softer texture, steam for a bit longer; for a firmer result, reduce the steaming time.
  8. Serve:

    • Carefully remove the bowl from the steamer and turn it out onto a serving plate. The Nasi Tim Ayam should come out in a neat, compact shape. Serve hot and enjoy!

This traditional Indonesian dish, Nasi Tim Ayam, combines tender chicken with flavorful sauce and rice, all steamed together to create a comforting and satisfying meal.
