Sapi Bombay ala Hokben: A Simple and Flavorful Beef Stir-Fry Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 200 grams of thinly sliced fresh beef
  • 1 large onion (or 2-3 small onions, according to your preference)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon white pepper powder
  • 1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for sautéing beef)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for sautéing garlic)
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated ginger
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Beef:

    • In a bowl, combine the oyster sauce, sweet soy sauce, white pepper powder, and sesame oil.
    • Add the thinly sliced beef to the mixture, ensuring it is well-coated.
    • Let the beef marinate for approximately 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  2. Cook the Beef:

    • Heat a tablespoon of butter in a pan over medium-high heat.
    • Add the marinated beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until the beef is tender and cooked through.
    • Once cooked, remove the beef from the pan and set it aside.
  3. Prepare the Aromatics:

    • In the same pan, add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
    • Sauté the finely chopped garlic and grated ginger until fragrant and golden brown.
  4. Combine and Finish:

    • Return the cooked beef to the pan with the garlic and ginger.
    • Add the sliced onion, granulated sugar, and salt to taste.
    • Stir everything together and add a splash of water if needed to prevent the mixture from drying out.
    • Cover and cook for a few minutes until the onions are softened and translucent.
  5. Serve:

    • Once the onions have wilted and the flavors have melded together, remove the pan from heat.
    • Serve hot, and enjoy your Sapi Bombay ala Hokben!

Tips:

  • Adjust the number of onions based on your preference for sweetness and texture.
  • Feel free to add vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for additional crunch and flavor.
  • For an extra kick, consider adding a pinch of chili flakes or a splash of soy sauce.

Enjoy this delicious, quick-to-make Sapi Bombay ala Hokben with steamed rice or your favorite side dishes. Perfect for a satisfying weeknight meal or a flavorful addition to your dinner repertoire!
