Ingredients:

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 2 cups honey
  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • 2 cups soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup five-spice powder
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 4 cups cooked rice

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Sauce:

    • In a 3-1/2 quart slow cooker, combine ketchup, honey, white vinegar, soy sauce, five-spice powder, chopped onion, minced ginger, and minced garlic. Stir well to combine.
  2. Broil the Ribs:

    • Position a broiler rack about 6 inches from the source of heat and preheat the broiler.
    • Place the ribs on the broiler rack and broil, turning once, until browned, about 10 minutes.
  3. Slow Cook:

    • Transfer the browned ribs to the slow cooker, ensuring they are coated with the sauce.
    • Cover and cook on LOW for 5 to 6 hours, or until the ribs are tender and juicy.
  4. Prepare the Sauce:

    • Once the ribs are cooked, transfer them to a serving platter and cover with aluminum foil to keep warm.
    • Skim any excess fat from the surface of the sauce in the slow cooker.
    • In a medium saucepan, bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat.
    • Cook until the sauce is reduced to about 1 cup, approximately 6 to 8 minutes.
  5. Thicken the Sauce:

    • In a small bowl, dissolve cornstarch in a tablespoon of water to create a slurry.
    • Stir the cornstarch mixture into the simmering sauce and cook until thickened, about 2 minutes.
  6. Serve:

    • Pour the thickened sauce over the ribs on the serving platter.
    • Serve immediately with hot cooked rice to soak up all the delicious flavors.
