Tempe Bacem (Sweet Braised Tempe)

Ingredients:

Main Ingredients Amount
Tempe (cut into slices or cubes) 1 block (adjust to preference)
Spice Paste Amount
Shallots 5 cloves
Garlic 5 cloves
Candlenuts 2 pieces
Coriander 1 tsp
Additional Ingredients Amount
Sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) 1 tbsp
Brown sugar 1 tbsp
Water As needed
Salt To taste
Seasoning (optional) As preferred

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the spice paste: Start by blending or grinding the shallots, garlic, candlenuts, and coriander until it forms a smooth paste.

  2. Cook the spice paste: In a pan, heat a small amount of oil and sauté the spice paste until it releases a fragrant aroma, about 2-3 minutes.

  3. Add the tempeh: Once the spice paste is fragrant, add the tempeh pieces to the pan. Stir well to coat them with the spices.

  4. Simmer: Pour in the water, sweet soy sauce (kecap manis), brown sugar, salt, and optional seasoning (if desired). Stir everything together and let the tempeh simmer on medium heat.

  5. Cook until tender: Continue cooking until the liquid reduces and the tempeh absorbs the sweet, savory flavors. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

  6. Serve: Once the liquid has almost evaporated and the tempeh has a caramelized finish, remove from heat. Serve hot with rice or as a side dish.

Enjoy your delicious Tempe Bacem, a flavorful and comforting Indonesian dish!
