Gurame Asam Manis (Sweet and Sour Gourami Fish)
Ingredients
For the Fish:
- 2 whole gourami fish, cut into pieces
- 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons sago flour
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- Water as needed
For the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

- 5 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
- 2 cm ginger, bruised
- 2 cucumbers, julienned
- 1 stalk green onion, sliced
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- Pineapple chunks to taste
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 2 fresh tomatoes, pureed
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch, dissolved in a little water
- Salt to taste
- Sugar to taste
- Water as needed
Instructions
Prepare the Fish:
- Gather all ingredients.
- Cut the gourami fish into desired pieces. Marinate with lime juice, salt, and pepper. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
- In a bowl, mix all-purpose flour, sago flour, water, and a pinch of salt until the batter reaches the right consistency.
- Heat oil in a pan. Dip the fish pieces into the batter, then fry until golden brown and cooked through. Set aside.
Make the Sweet and Sour Sauce:
- Heat a bit of oil in a pan and sauté garlic and ginger until fragrant.
- Add the julienned cucumbers and stir well.
- Pour in the pureed tomatoes, pineapple chunks, ketchup, salt, sugar, vinegar, and enough water. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
- Add the sliced green onions and the cornstarch slurry, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
Serve:
- Pour the sweet and sour sauce over the fried gourami fish.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious Gurame Asam Manis!
