Gurame Asam Manis (Sweet and Sour Gourami Fish)

Ingredients

For the Fish:

  • 2 whole gourami fish, cut into pieces
  • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons sago flour
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Water as needed

For the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • 5 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 2 cm ginger, bruised
  • 2 cucumbers, julienned
  • 1 stalk green onion, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • Pineapple chunks to taste
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 fresh tomatoes, pureed
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch, dissolved in a little water
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar to taste
  • Water as needed

Instructions

Prepare the Fish:

  1. Gather all ingredients.
  2. Cut the gourami fish into desired pieces. Marinate with lime juice, salt, and pepper. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
  3. In a bowl, mix all-purpose flour, sago flour, water, and a pinch of salt until the batter reaches the right consistency.
  4. Heat oil in a pan. Dip the fish pieces into the batter, then fry until golden brown and cooked through. Set aside.

Make the Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  1. Heat a bit of oil in a pan and sauté garlic and ginger until fragrant.
  2. Add the julienned cucumbers and stir well.
  3. Pour in the pureed tomatoes, pineapple chunks, ketchup, salt, sugar, vinegar, and enough water. Stir continuously until the mixture comes to a boil.
  4. Add the sliced green onions and the cornstarch slurry, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  5. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Serve:

  1. Pour the sweet and sour sauce over the fried gourami fish.
  2. Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious Gurame Asam Manis!
