Sweet and Spicy Mujaer Fish
Ingredients:
- 1/2 kg mujaer fish (you can substitute with gourami if available)
- 2 carrots, julienned
- 1 onion, sliced
- 7 cloves of garlic
- 13 bird’s eye chilies
- 4 shallots
- 2 tablespoons tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- Salt
- Pepper
- 100 ml water
- Ginger
- Lime
Steps:
-
Preparing the Fish:
- Clean the fish thoroughly, making sure to remove all scales and innards. Score the flesh of the fish with a few diagonal cuts.
- Season the fish with salt, pepper, ginger slices, lime juice, and 2 cloves of crushed garlic. Let it marinate for 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
-
Preparing the Ingredients:
- Crush the remaining 5 cloves of garlic.
- Slice the onion, shallots, and bird’s eye chilies.
-
Cooking the Fish:
- Heat some oil in a pan and fry the mujaer fish until it is golden brown and cooked through. Set aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
-
Cooking the Vegetables:
- In a separate pan, sauté the sliced shallots and onion until fragrant.
- Add the crushed garlic and continue to sauté until aromatic.
- Add the julienned carrots and pour in the water. Stir well and cook until the carrots are almost tender.
-
Making the Sauce:
- Stir in the tomato sauce and oyster sauce into the pan with the vegetables.
- Add a squeeze of lime juice and stir to combine.
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
-
Combining Everything:
- Carefully add the fried mujaer fish to the pan with the sauce. Gently stir to coat the fish with the sauce without breaking it apart.
- Cook for another few minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
-
Serving:
- Once everything is well combined and heated through, transfer the fish to a serving plate.
- Serve the sweet and spicy mujaer fish hot, garnished with additional lime slices if desired.
