Dive into the delightful world of Indonesian cuisine with this vibrant dish featuring shredded tuna, known locally as ikan tongkol. Infused with aromatic spices and a balance of sweet and spicy flavors, this dish is sure to become a favorite in your kitchen. Perfect for serving alongside steamed rice or as part of a larger feast, let’s explore how to prepare this delicious recipe.

Ingredients

For the Tuna:

  • 250 grams of tuna (ikan tongkol), cooked and shredded

For the Spice Mixture:

  • 8 shallots (bawang merah), finely chopped
  • 6 cloves of garlic (bawang putih), minced
  • 2 pieces of tamarind (asam jawa)
  • To taste: Bird’s eye chilies (cabe rawit), red bell peppers (cabe merah besar), green bell peppers (cabe hijau besar)
  • 1 medium tomato, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of palm sugar (gula merah), finely grated
  • ½ teaspoon of flavor enhancer (penyedap)
  • 1 teaspoon of sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
  • 200 ml of water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tuna: Begin by frying the tuna until fully cooked and golden brown. Once done, carefully shred the fish, removing any bones, and set it aside.

  2. Sauté the Aromatics: In a skillet over medium heat, add a splash of oil and sauté the chopped shallots, minced garlic, and your chosen chilies along with the tamarind until fragrant and golden brown.

  3. Create the Sauce: Pour in the water, followed by the sliced tomato, salt, palm sugar, sweet soy sauce, and flavor enhancer. Stir well to combine and adjust the taste to your preference.

  4. Combine and Simmer: Once the sauce is bubbling, gently fold in the shredded tuna. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes, letting the flavors meld together while ensuring there is a little sauce left to keep the dish moist.

  5. Serve and Enjoy: Once the tuna is well-coated in the spicy sauce and has absorbed the flavors, remove from heat. This dish can be served warm alongside rice or as a flavorful filling for wraps.

Enjoy the beautiful balance of sweet and spicy notes in every bite of this Spicy Sweet Shredded Tuna. Perfect for any occasion, it’s a testament to the vibrant flavors of Indonesian cooking! 😍
