Sapi Kecap (Indonesian Sweet Soy Beef)

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 kg beef, cut into cubes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 5 shallots, sliced thinly
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1 packet ground pepper
  • A pinch of nutmeg, finely ground
  • Salt, to taste
  • Seasoning powder, to taste
  • Water, as needed
  • Kecap Manis Bango (sweet soy sauce), to taste
  • Oil, for sautéing
  • Chopped green onions, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef: Cut the beef into small, even cubes. Rinse thoroughly and drain well.

  2. Prepare the Aromatics:

    • Mince the garlic and chop the onion.
    • Slice the shallots and set aside.
  3. Cook the Shallots:

    • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
    • Fry the shallots until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. Sauté the Aromatics:

    • In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed.
    • Sauté the minced garlic and chopped onion until fragrant.
  5. Cook the Beef:

    • Add the cubed beef to the pan with the garlic and onion.
    • Stir-fry briefly to sear the meat.
  6. Season the Beef:

    • Sprinkle the ground pepper, nutmeg, and salt over the beef.
    • Add the sweet soy sauce (Kecap Manis Bango) and stir to coat the meat evenly.
  7. Simmer:

    • Pour in enough water to just cover the beef.
    • Let the mixture simmer until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened. Adjust seasoning with seasoning powder if needed.
  8. Final Touches:

    • Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary.
    • Once the beef is cooked through and the sauce is reduced to a thick consistency, remove from heat.
  9. Serve:

    • Garnish with crispy fried shallots and chopped green onions.
    • Serve hot with steamed rice or as desired.
