Title: Indonesian Sweet Soy Braised Beef (Semur Daging Sapi Goreng)

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 kg beef (feel free to include offals if desired)
  • Sweet soy sauce (to taste)
  • Water (as needed)
  • 1 tomato, cut into halves
  • 4 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and sugar (to taste)
  • Fried shallots (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef:
Begin by washing the beef thoroughly. Boil it until tender, then cut into pieces according to your preference. Set aside.

  2. Sauté Aromatics:
In a pan, heat a little oil and sauté the crushed garlic until fragrant. Add the thinly sliced shallots, tomato halves, and bay leaf. Continue cooking until the shallots become translucent and aromatic.

  3. Combine Ingredients:
Add the beef pieces to the pan and stir briefly. Pour in water—approximately 2 cups—enough to cover the beef. Add sweet soy sauce according to your taste preferences.

  4. Simmer and Season:
Allow the mixture to simmer over low heat, letting the liquid reduce and the flavors meld together. Season with salt and sugar to taste. Adjust seasoning if necessary, adding more if needed.

  5. Finish Cooking:
Continue cooking until the sauce has thickened and the beef is well-coated with the flavorful sauce. The liquid should be reduced to a rich, thick consistency.

  6. Serve:
Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with fried shallots for added texture and flavor.

Enjoy your Semur Daging Sapi Goreng with steamed rice or as a flavorful side dish. Happy cooking! ☺
