Description:
Sweet Ulundhu Kanji, or Urad Dal Porridge, is a traditional and nutritious South Indian breakfast that was served in ancient times. This semi-solid porridge can be prepared either sweet or salty, with this recipe offering a mildly sweet version enriched with the aromatic flavors of coconut and cardamom. It is traditionally given to girls during puberty as it strengthens bones and the spinal cord, and is considered beneficial for pregnant women and older adults. This light yet fulfilling porridge is a perfect breakfast option, especially during the winter months.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup White Urad Dal (Split), soaked for 30 minutes
  • 4 cups Water
  • 1/2 cup Jaggery
  • 3 Cardamom Pods/Seeds, pounded
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Coconut, grated

Preparation Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes

Instructions:

  1. Begin by washing and soaking the urad dal in water for about 30 minutes. After soaking, drain the dal and add it to a blender along with the cardamom pods. Add a little water and blend to form a smooth paste.

  2. In a pan, bring the 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the jaggery and dissolve it completely. Strain the mixture to remove any impurities.

  3. Return the jaggery water to the pan and bring it back to a low simmer. Add the prepared urad dal paste to the boiling water, stirring constantly to avoid any lumps.

  4. Continue cooking on medium heat for 4-5 minutes while stirring to maintain a smooth texture. Once it reaches a thick and smooth consistency like porridge, remove from heat.

  5. Stir in the grated fresh coconut and mix well. Serve the Sweet Ulundhu Kanji warm for a wholesome breakfast.

Enjoy this nourishing porridge as a satisfying, healthy start to your day!
