Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup black lentils (whole)
  • 1/4 cup red kidney beans (rajma)
  • 1/4 cup split black gram (urad dal)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
  • Lemon juice, for drizzling

Instructions:

Step Description
1 Mix and wash the black lentils, red kidney beans, and split black gram thoroughly.
2 Soak the mixed lentils in water for about 30 minutes.
3 Pressure cook the soaked lentils until soft but not mushy, approximately 3 whistles.
4 Mash the cooked lentils while they are still hot.
5 Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
6 Add cumin seeds to the hot oil and let them splutter.
7 Once the cumin seeds stop spluttering, add finely chopped onions, grated ginger, and chopped green chilies.
8 Stir-fry the mixture until the onions turn soft and translucent.
9 Fold in the red chili powder and turmeric powder, mixing well with the onion mixture.
10 Add the finely chopped tomatoes to the pot and cook until they are soft and mushy.
11 Season the mixture with salt according to taste.
12 Add the mashed lentils to the pot, mixing well with the onion-tomato mixture.
13 Allow the dal to come to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
14 Garnish the dal with freshly chopped coriander leaves and a generous drizzle of lemon juice.
15 Serve hot with roti or rice, accompanied by your favorite raita on the side. (Try cucumber and tomato raita for a refreshing combination).
