Instructions:

1ST DAY:

  1. Dissolve canning salt in 1 gallon of boiling water.
  2. Pour the saltwater mixture over the cucumbers and allow them to stand overnight.

2ND DAY:

  2. In another container, mix alum with 1 gallon of boiling water.
  3. Pour the alum water over the cucumbers and let them stand overnight.

3RD DAY:

  1. Discard the alum water.
  2. Prepare 1 gallon of clear boiling water.
  3. Pour the clear water over the cucumbers and let them stand for 24 hours.

4TH DAY:

  1. Boil 1 gallon of vinegar along with assorted spices wrapped in a cloth bag.
  2. Allow the mixture to boil for 15 minutes.
  3. Pour the hot vinegar mixture over the drained cucumbers.
  4. Let the cucumbers stand for 9 days, remembering to move the spice bag around each day.

13TH DAY:

  1. Slice or cut the pickles.
  2. Layer the pickle slices alternately with sugar until all the sugar is used.
  3. Let the pickles stand overnight, allowing the sugar to pull out juice from the cucumbers and create a syrupy consistency.

14TH DAY:
