Introducing the delectable Apple Charlotte, a delightful fall dessert that will enchant your taste buds with its comforting flavors and cozy appeal. While it may not adhere strictly to the traditional charlotte recipe, this rendition boasts its own unique charm and simplicity, making it a perfect choice for a cozy weeknight treat or any occasion where you crave something sweet yet easy to prepare. 🍎🍂

With a total prep and cook time of just over an hour, including a brief 20-minute stint in the oven, this dessert is designed to tantalize your senses without keeping you tied up in the kitchen for hours on end. Let’s dive into the recipe and discover how to recreate this culinary masterpiece at home.

Apple Charlotte Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 8 apples
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sweet unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg
  • 8 slices of firm-textured bread

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, ensuring it’s ready to welcome your delightful creation.

  2. Prepare Ramekins: Gather eight 6-ounce ramekins, placing them on a baking sheet. No need to butter them at this stage.

  3. Cook Apple Mixture: In a large sauté pan, combine the sliced apples, sugar, salt, apple cider, and fresh lemon juice. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft, approximately 10 minutes. Set aside to cool.

  4. Prepare Spice Butter: In a small bowl, mix together the sweet unsalted butter, sugar, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth and well incorporated.

  5. Prep Bread Rounds: Using a biscuit cutter, cut out eight rounds from the slices of bread to fit into the bottoms of the ramekins. Butter each round with the spice butter and place them, butter side down, into the bottom of each ramekin.

  6. Line Ramekins: Butter the remaining bread slices and cut each slice into three pieces lengthwise. Line the sides of each ramekin with the bread pieces, ensuring the buttered side faces towards the ramekin. Don’t worry about trimming the pieces that stick up just yet.

  7. Fill with Apple Mixture: Divide the cooked apple mixture among the ramekins, gently pressing it down into the molds. Reserve 16 apple slices for garnish.

  8. Trim Excess Bread: Trim off any pieces of bread that stick up above the edge of the ramekins.

  9. Bake: Place the assembled charlottes in the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the brioche is beautifully toasted.

  10. Unmold and Serve: Carefully unmold the charlottes onto plates, garnishing each one with two slices of reserved apple. Serve with creme anglais (find the recipe in my cookbook) drizzled around the charlotte and a dollop of whipped cream on the side.

There you have it, a tantalizing recipe for Apple Charlotte that promises to delight your taste buds with every bite. Whether you’re indulging in it as a comforting weeknight dessert or serving it up for a special occasion, this dish is sure to leave a lasting impression. Enjoy the cozy flavors of fall in every delicious spoonful! 🍏🍞✨
