Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal 🌽
- 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour 🌾
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar 🍬
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder 🌿
- 1 teaspoon baking powder 🧁
- 1/2 teaspoon salt 🧂
- 1 cup milk 🥛
- 1 large egg 🥚
- 1 tablespoon shortening 🧈
- 6 hot dogs 🌭
- Oil, for deep frying (heated to 375°F) 🌟
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Batter:
In a large mixing bowl, combine 1/2 cup of yellow cornmeal, 6 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of dry mustard powder, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Mix these dry ingredients thoroughly to ensure even distribution of flavors. -
Mix in Wet Ingredients:
Add 1 cup of milk, 1 large egg, and 1 tablespoon of shortening to the dry ingredients. Stir the mixture until it becomes very smooth, with no lumps remaining. The batter should have a consistency thick enough to coat the hot dogs but still pourable. -
Prepare for Frying:
Pour the batter into a tall glass. This will help in dipping the hot dogs later. -
Prepare the Hot Dogs:
Insert sticks into each of the 6 hot dogs. Make sure they are firmly secured so they won’t slip off during frying. -
Coat the Hot Dogs:
Dip each hot dog into the prepared batter, ensuring that it is coated evenly. Allow any excess batter to drip off before moving to the next step. -
Heat the Oil:
In a deep fryer or large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat oil to 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer to accurately monitor the temperature. If you don’t have a deep fryer, you can use a pot, but be sure to carefully control the heat to maintain the correct temperature. -
Fry the Corn Dogs:
Carefully lower the battered hot dogs into the hot oil, one at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry until the corn dogs turn golden brown and crispy, which should take about two minutes. Adjust the frying time slightly depending on the size of the hot dogs and your oil’s temperature. -
Drain and Serve:
Remove the corn dogs from the oil and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite condiments, such as spicy mustard for an extra kick.
Enjoy your homemade corn dogs as a fun and tasty treat that’s perfect for any occasion! 🌭✨
