Hot Cross Buns Recipe
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Servings: 8 delicious Hot Cross Buns
Description: Although traditionally enjoyed during Easter, these Hot Cross Buns are so delightful that I often find myself baking them throughout the year, minus the crosses, for a tasty treat any time! The preparation time mentioned doesn’t include the time required for the Bread Machine to prepare the dough, but it does account for the dough rising. These buns are a delightful combination of spices, fruit, and sweetness, perfect for a cozy breakfast or snack.
Ingredients:
Quantity | Ingredient |
---|---|
4 | Dried yeast |
4 cups | Bread flour |
1 tsp | Salt |
1/2 cup | Brown sugar |
75g | Butter |
1 tsp | Mixed spice |
1 tsp | Ground cinnamon |
1/2 tsp | Ground cloves |
1 tsp | Vanilla extract |
1 cup | Currants |
1 | Egg |
1/2 cup | Milk |
1/2 cup | Water |
1 tbsp | Golden syrup |
1 tbsp | Honey |
1/4 cup | Water (for glaze) |
60g | Cold butter (for crosses) |
1 cup | Flour (for crosses) |
3 tbsp | Cold water (for crosses) |
Instructions:
- Prepare Dough: In a saucepan, bring water, milk, butter, and golden syrup to a boil. Let it cool.
- Bread Machine: Place all ingredients into the Bread Machine in the order listed. Use the ‘raisin’ dough cycle, adding currants when the machine signals.
- Divide Dough: Once the cycle is complete, divide the dough into 8 equal portions, then each portion into 4, shaping them into round balls.
- Shape Buns: To shape each bun, form a ring shape with your thumb and forefinger, push the dough through, and pinch the edges underneath.
- Arrange: Place the buns in a lightly greased baking or roasting pan, leaving space between each bun.
- Rise: Cover the buns and let them rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 225°C (435°F).
- Bake: Bake the buns for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned.
- Glaze: While the buns are still hot, brush them with the prepared glaze.
- Crosses: To make the crosses, rub cold butter into flour, add cold water to form a stiff dough. Roll thinly, cut into strips, brush with beaten egg, and place on the buns before baking.
