Lazy Day Lasagna

Description

A delightful, straightforward lasagna that has been a cherished family favorite for years. This easy recipe offers the flexibility to customize based on what you have on hand and how much time you have to spend. Sometimes, I enrich the sauce with browned ground beef or Italian sausage, and occasionally, I swap ricotta cheese for the traditional cottage cheese. My husband, a devoted fan of Italian cuisine, considers this his all-time favorite lasagna. The total cooking time encompasses boiling the noodles, baking the lasagna, and allowing it to stand before serving.

Ingredients

  • 6 dried lasagna noodles
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 cup cream-style cottage cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 jar (about 2 cups) spaghetti sauce (your choice of brand)

Instructions

  1. Boil the Noodles: Start by bringing a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the dried lasagna noodles and cook according to the package instructions until tender. Drain the noodles and set aside.

  2. Prepare the Sauce: While the noodles are cooking, stir the dried oregano into the spaghetti sauce. This will infuse the sauce with a lovely herby flavor that complements the layers of cheese.

  3. Grease the Baking Dish: Lightly grease a 10x6x1-1/2 inch baking dish. For ease, you can use a non-stick spray like Pam to coat the dish.

  4. Layer the Lasagna: Begin assembling the lasagna by spreading a thin layer of spaghetti sauce on the bottom of the greased dish. Place a layer of noodles over the sauce. Spread half of the cream-style cottage cheese over the noodles, followed by a layer of shredded mozzarella cheese. Pour half of the remaining spaghetti sauce over the mozzarella layer.

  5. Repeat the Layers: Repeat the layering process with the remaining ingredients: another layer of noodles, the remaining cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese, and the remaining spaghetti sauce.

  6. Add Parmesan: Sprinkle the top layer with grated Parmesan cheese. This will create a delightful, golden crust as it bakes.

  7. Bake: Place the baking dish in a preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and golden brown.

  8. Rest Before Serving: Once baked, let the lasagna stand for about 10 minutes before serving. This resting time allows the layers to set and makes serving much easier.
