Instructions:

  1. Prepare Yeast Mixture:
    In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and fast-rising active dry yeast. Let it stand for about 5 minutes until it becomes very bubbly.

  2. Mix Dough:
    Using a wire whisk, add the remaining ingredients, starting with only 1 cup of flour. Beat until a smooth dough forms. Gradually beat in the rest of the flour until the batter is thick, sticky, and smooth, ensuring all the flour is dissolved.

  3. Divide Dough:
    Divide the dough evenly between 5 oven-proof soup bowls (each 5″ in diameter), which have been sprayed with Pam and dusted with cornmeal to prevent sticking. Alternatively, for a more authentic shape, divide the batter equally between 5 greased cans from 1-1/2 lb Dinty Moore Stew, also dusted with cornmeal.

  4. Let Rise:
    Cover each bowl or can with a piece of Saran wrap sprayed with Pam (sprayed side down). Allow the dough to rise for almost an hour or until it reaches just above the rim of the bowls or cans. Discard the Saran wrap once risen.

  5. Bake:
    Preheat the oven to 375°F. Bake the dough on the center rack for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.

  6. Cool:
    Let the baked dough cool in the containers on a rack, spraying the tops with a bit of Pam while they cool to keep the crusts soft.

  7. Prepare Sandwiches:
    To use for sandwiches, slice each baked dough in half horizontally and grill on a lightly buttered hot griddle, similar to making a grilled cheese sandwich, or toast under a broiler until golden.

  8. Assemble:
