Ingredients:
- 1 head iceberg lettuce
- 1 bunch spinach
- 4 eggs
- 3 green onions
- 1 package bacon
- 10 oz frozen peas
- 1 tbsp sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup fat-free sour cream
- 1 1/2 cups mayonnaise
- 1 1/2 cups diced celery
- 3/4 cup diced ham
- 1 head lettuce (optional)
- Cherry tomatoes (optional)
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Bowl: Choose a beautiful glass bowl, preferably with straight sides, to showcase the layers of the salad.
-
Layer 1: Lettuce
- Tear the iceberg lettuce into bite-sized pieces and spread half of it evenly in the bottom of the bowl.
-
Layer 2: Spinach
- Clean the spinach, remove the stems, and tear it into bite-sized pieces. Spread half of the spinach over the lettuce layer.
-
Layer 3: Eggs
- Hard boil the eggs, then peel and slice them. Spread half of the sliced eggs over the spinach layer.
-
Layer 4: Bacon
- Cook the bacon until crispy, then crumble it into pieces. Spread half of the crumbled bacon over the egg layer.
-
Layer 5: Peas
- Spread half of the frozen peas evenly over the bacon layer. Sprinkle the peas with sugar, salt, and pepper.
-
Layer 6: Dressing
- In a bowl, mix together the fat-free sour cream and mayonnaise until well combined. Spread half of the dressing over the pea layer.
-
Repeat Layers:
- Repeat the layers in the same order, ending with the second layer of dressing.
-
Cheese Topping:
- Sprinkle the shredded Swiss and cheddar cheese over the top layer of dressing.
-
Chill:
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld together.
-
Garnish:
- Before serving, clean the green onions and trim off the roots. Cut the green onions into uniform lengths, about 2 inches taller than the bowl.
-
Decorate:
- Unwrap the bowl and imagine it as the face of a clock. Slide one green onion down between the salad and the bowl at each “hour” position, with the top of the onion sticking above the bowl. If there are any green onions remaining, slice them and sprinkle over the salad.
-
Optional Ingredients:
- Use the optional ingredients such as diced celery, ham, additional lettuce, or cherry tomatoes for additional layers or to vary the salad according to your preference.
-
Serve:
- This Seven Layer Salad is so visually appealing that you might find yourself needing to take the first serving, as guests may hesitate to “mess it up”!
Enjoy this delightful Seven Layer Salad as a refreshing side dish or a light meal. Its vibrant colors and delicious flavors are sure to be a hit at any gathering or family dinner!
