Alan’s Favorite Triple-Layer Birthday Cake ๐ŸŽ‚

Overview:

Growing up, my brother and I each had our favorite birthday cakes that our mother would make. This 3-layer cake was my absolute favorite. With its moist layers and delicious icing, it’s the perfect treat for any special occasion.

Ingredients:

Ingredients Quantity
Sugar 3/4 cup
Salt 2 tsp
Cake flour 1 1/2 cups
Cinnamon 3 tsp
Clove 1/2 tsp
Baking powder 1/8 tsp
Water 1 cup
Nutmeg 1 1/4 tsp
Baking soda 1 tsp
Confectioners’ sugar 4 cups
Lemon juice 2 tbsp
Butter 1 cup

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:

    • In a mixing bowl, combine Crisco, sugar, salt, cake flour, baking powder, 1 1/4 cups water, and egg whites. Mix until smooth.
    • Divide the batter evenly into 3 soup bowls, as each layer will have a different flavor.
  2. Layer Preparation:

    • 1st Layer: Add 1/2 teaspoon almond flavor.
    • 2nd Layer: Add 3 drops of red food coloring and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
    • 3rd Layer: Add 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon cloves, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/8 teaspoon baking soda, 2 tablespoons cocoa, and 2 tablespoons water.
  3. Baking:

    • Grease and lightly flour 3 round layer cake pans.
    • Pour the batter from each bowl into each pan.
    • Bake in a preheated oven at 360 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Assembling the Cake:

    • Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven, but do not open the oven door before 30 minutes to prevent the cakes from falling.
    • Place a cake plate on top of the brown layer, then carefully invert the pan so the cake drops out onto the plate.
    • Spread a thin layer of icing on top of the brown layer.
    • Repeat the process for the pink and white layers, spreading icing between each layer.
  5. Icing the Cake:

    • Once all layers are stacked, generously ice the top and sides of the cake with the remaining icing.
    • Ensure the icing is not too runny; it should be firm.
    • For extra firmness, refrigerate the cake uncovered until the icing sets.
