Recipe: Chocolate Viennese Biscuits

Description:
These Chocolate Viennese Biscuits are a delightful treat, perfect for any occasion! With a texture reminiscent of shortbread, they pair wonderfully with a cup of coffee or make an elegant dessert to impress your guests. 🍪☕

Ingredients:

Quantity Ingredient
225g Self-raising flour
90g Cornflour
30g Unsalted butter
225g Icing sugar
90g Vanilla essence
1 Egg (optional)
Chocolate (for dipping)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F). Prepare 2 large baking sheets by greasing them lightly to prevent sticking.

  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, sift together the self-raising flour, cornflour, and cocoa powder. This step ensures that your dry ingredients are well combined and free of lumps.

  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In another large bowl, beat the unsalted butter and icing sugar together until fluffy and well combined. This will create a creamy base for your biscuit dough.

  4. Add Flavor: If using, add the vanilla essence to the butter-sugar mixture and mix until incorporated. This will infuse your biscuits with a delicious hint of vanilla flavor.

  5. Mix Dry Ingredients: With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the sifted flour mixture to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms. If the dough seems too dry, you can add one egg to help bind everything together.

  6. Shape the Dough: Take portions of the dough and shape them into ‘bar’ shapes, about 10cm long by 5cm wide. You can use a piping bag fitted with a star tip for a decorative touch, if desired.

  7. Bake: Place the shaped dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between each biscuit. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, rotating the baking sheets halfway through baking. Keep an eye on them as they should only be slightly firm when done.

  8. Cool: Once baked, transfer the biscuits to a wire cooling rack and allow them to cool completely. This will ensure that they firm up and achieve the perfect texture.

  9. Dust with Icing Sugar: Once cooled, dust the biscuits with icing sugar for a beautiful finishing touch. This adds a touch of sweetness and makes them look even more inviting.

  10. Dip in Chocolate: Melt the chocolate in a microwave or over a double boiler until smooth. Dip one end of each biscuit into the melted chocolate and place it back onto greaseproof paper to allow the chocolate to set.

  11. Serve or Store: Once the chocolate has set, your Chocolate Viennese Biscuits are ready to be enjoyed! Store any leftovers in an airtight container with waxed paper between layers to keep them fresh.
